The webinar features The Black Archives’ Executive Director Timothy A. Barber, Operations & Programming Manager Kamila Pritchett, and Assistant Archivist Luis Berthin.

The Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. was founded in 1977 by Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, who is an SFA member, as a non-profit organization to collect and preserve the rapidly vanishing material that reflects the African American experience in Miami-Dade County. Over the years, the collection has grown, and the Black Archives is now a national resource for this history of the 19th and 20th centuries, providing a rich repository of materials that is used by scholars, students, teachers, and the media.

Dr. Ashley Farmer's Archiving While Black

Friday, November 20, 2020 at 2 pm - 3 pm

Dr. Ashley D. Farmer will speak on her experience collecting Black women’s archives and being a Black woman in the archive. Dr. Farmer is a historian of black women's history, intellectual history, and radical politics. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Departments of History and African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of Remaking Black Power: How Black Women Transformed an Era and the co-author of New Perspectives on the Black Intellectual Tradition. Farmer's scholarship has appeared in numerous scholarly journals. Her research has also been featured in several popular outlets including Vibe, NPR, The Chronicle Review, and The Washington Post. Farmer earned her BA from Spelman College, an MA in History and a PhD in African American Studies from Harvard University.
